Did you know that a 16 year old driver is ten times more likely to be involved in an automobile wreck than an adult? In fact, crash rates are higher during a teen’s first few months behind the wheel and statistics show that on average, thirty people are injured every day as a result of a young driver. Alarmingly, every three days on average, someone is killed as a result of a crash involving a young driver.
American Medical Association studies show that the human brain does not reach full maturity until the mid to late 20’s. And, since it takes approximately 1,500 skills to drive behind the wheel, in such areas as observation, perception, interpretation and anticipation you can see why young drivers might be more at risk due to driver inexperience and immaturity.
As if this were not enough, there are also other factors to consider including:
1. Operating a motor vehicle is often a new experience for young drivers
2. Young drivers are often less developed than seasoned drivers in searching, scanning and reacting to traffic patterns
3. And young drivers often underestimate distractions caused by driving with other teens.
In the next few days we’ll be posting Maryland driving requirements and driving tips for Parents and Teens. We welcome your comments or questions and your personal driving stories and will be happy to provide additional information or clarification on each.
